Shaan

The last word

by Anis Ahmed Shakur

‘Like people, lasting movies want not only to be preserved, but to be desired.’

The above maxim hold true to Shaan’s movies. Shaan is the highly talented son of legendary writer- director, Riaz Shahid, and legendary actress, Neelo.

Shaan and the film director Mohammad Javed Fazil’s first professional collaboration was the film ‘Bulandi’, in 1990. Hence, Shaan debuted in the film ‘Bulandi’, in 1990, opposite Reema.

‘Bulandi’ was a truthful movie by any stretch of the imagination, in which Shaan offered one of the great acting achievements of his life. Over the years, Shana has boldly crafted a challenge rarely found in Pakistani show business.

There is more to his talents than meets the eye. The 1990 film ‘Nagina’ is a testament to Shaan’s acting skill. Shan- Madiha Shah played the lead in director Altaf Husain’s ‘Nagina.’

Likewise, the 1990 Punjabi film ‘Pyar karn toon naeen darna’, took Shaan on the road to lasting fame.

Essentially, Shaan is a natural actor, and there are genuinely sweet moments between him and his co- artist. Shaan came out distinctly powerful in the three movies below:

‘Mard’, 1991, director, Altaf Husain. Shaan- Madiha Shah played the lead.
‘Nigahain’, 1991, director Hasnain, Shaan- Madiha Shah played the lead.
‘Naila’, 1992, director Hasnain, Shaan played the lead opposite Madiha Shah.

Shaan takes the genre to another level with an amazing vision. About that there should be no question. Additionally, we have a huge number of audience who relate to Shaan’s style of expression.

Alternating between acting and directing, Shaan was frequently cast in lead romantic roles. Most memorably in the five films below:

‘Chahat’, 1992, director Hasnain, Shaan worked opposite Reema in lead role.
‘Aan milo sajna’, 1993, Shaan- Reema played the lead.
‘Aawargi’, 1994, director Mohammad Javed Fazil, Shaan and Madiha Shah played the lead.
‘Mein nay pyar kya’, 1994, Shaan- Madiha Shah in lead roles.
‘Naam ki suhagan’, 1994, Shaan- Rubi in lead characters.

Shaan is an opinionated, engrossingly captivating actor. What is more, he could speak the tragic sense of the story. Over and above, Shaan also had a knack for finding the best in movies. Below is an example:

The scope of the story in vast in Shaan’s movies. Perhaps, because they are so creatively crafted. However, in the mid 1990s, some of his films could not succeed at the box office. Dejected, Shaan seriously thought to leave Pakistan and settle in U.S.A.

Fortunately, director Shamim Ara cast Shaan in her movie, ‘Aakhri mujra’, which brought popularity to Shaan as well.

Similarly, director-writer, Syed Noor, signed Shaan in his 1996 film ‘Ghunghat’. In ‘Ghunghat’, Shaan played a very different role of a jilted lover, opposite Resham. Director Sangeeta created the unerringly smart movie, ‘Khilona’, in 1996, with Shaan and Saima in lead roles.

The film ‘Khilona’ was followed by another magnificent movie ‘Sangam’, in 1997, with Shaan and Resham in lead characters.
Shaan made a series of outstanding films and continued to thrive as an actor. He won the hearts of his loyal fans through movies like the two below:

‘Nikah’, 1998, director Sangeeta, Shaan played the lead opposite Reema.
‘Do boond pani’, 1998, director Sangeeta, Shaan teamed up with Resham.

Shaan has a heart so big, it just burst with all that love. I don’t believe we have a word for this kind of love.

Jubilant admirers greeted the release of the film ‘Daku Rani’, 1999, directed by Syed Noor. Shaan paired off with Saima.

Shaan’s way, as actor-director, he came completely into his own. In movie after movie, Shaan offered hope to the inquisitive moviegoers. Moreover, he was successful in that particular brand of sentimentality—the love- hates stories of his movies.

Shaan’s 1999 movie as an actor and director was ‘Guns and roses’, in which he worked opposite Meera. Shaan, whose life and achievements inspired others, is all praise for his parents who did so much for the Pakistani cinema.

Reverting to Shaan’s movies, the film ‘Mujhay chand chaheye’, in the year 2000, is a touchstone to all his admirers. Shan who directed the movie, also played the lead opposite Reema.

Shaan, who has always been ambitious and motivated, gathered encomiums from the public after the theatrical release of the three films below:

‘Moosa Khan’, 2001, Shaan- Saima in lead roles.
‘Buddha gujjur’, 2002, Shaan- worked opposite Saima.
‘Shararat’, 2003, Shaan paired off with Reema.

Shaan won the Nigar Award for best actor in the film, ‘Bulandi’, in 1990.
Shaan won the Nigar Award for best actor in the film, ‘Ghunghat’, in 1996.

After all these years finally I know—and , best of all, Shan’s fans would know the secret of his success. That Shaan continued to work as an individual artist on what was in fact a group feat of filmmaking is presumably the secret of his potency.

Most definitely, Shaan still has a lot more years of fame left.
