Recovery of dues for Ittefaq Hospital
The Lahore
High Court on Monday stayed the recovery of Rs20.5 million
from Ittefaq Hospital by way of electricity charges pending
disposal of its petition but ordered it to pay Rs1.5 million
immediately and furnish security for payment of the balance
should the petition fail.
The petitioner hospital presently deposited a cheque for Rs1.5
million drawn in favour of Wapda to the LHC registrar,
according to its counsel, Ashtar Ausaf Ali.
The hospital had sought interim relief in an application moved
by it in its petition against the recovery of electricity
charges from it at commercial rates. Being a charitable
institution and a bulk consumer, it said, it was entitled to
concessional tariff.
The Businessman's Trust Hospital, the petitioner further
submitted, was not charged concessional tariff for being a
charitable institution while the Shaukat Khanum Memorial Trust
Hospital was allowed the same concession for being a bulk
consumer. Both hospitals, according to the petitioner, had
private rooms. The Ittefaq Hospital was no longer managed by
the Sharif family of the ousted premier, which had been
replaced by the Shafi family of the Ittefaq Group in its board
of trustees.
Justice Karamat Nazir Bhandari, who heard the petition,
adjourned further proceedings for April 25 after passing the
interim order.
Tajammal remanded: An accountability court on Monday remanded
former MNA from Gujrat Chaudhry Tajammal Husain and co-accused
Chaudhry Abdul Majeed in a cooperatives case in judicial
custody till May 7.
The accused was arrested on Jan 19. The court was informed
that the accused was in negotiations with the NAB for a
settlement. The court allowed Chaudhry Tajammal's request for
a better class.
Chaudhry Tajammal was the president of the National Industrial
Co-operative Finance Co-operation while Chaudhry Majeed was
the chief executive of the corporation.
The accused allegedly caused a loss of Rs24.8 million to the
corporation in the purchase of Ahmad Mansion on the Mall.
Pasbaan: An accountability court on Monday sent on judicial
remand Pasbaan Co-operatives' former chief executive Sheikh
Mansoor till April 25 and reserved its order on an application
seeking his release.
Sheikh Mansoor in the application filed under Section 24(d) of
the NAB Ordinance said he was entitled to be released because
no reference had been filed despite the completion of his 90
days in custody. The applicant said under the provision of the
law, no reference could be filed now when the detention period
prescribed there in had expired.
The Pasbaan officials is accused of misusing his authority in
illegally awarding a loan of Rs240 million to a bottling
company to the loss of the co-operative.

Fresh survey of kachi abadis in Punjab
The Punjab Kutchi Abadis director-general has
directed deputy commissioners throughout the province to
conduct a fresh survey of Kutchi Abadis in there respective
districts, it was learnt here on Sunday.
In a letter sent to all deputy commissioners in the province,
the DG has asked them to submit a detailed report in this
regard to his office at the earliest. The directorate general
of Kutchi Abadis plans to send a summary to the governor to
regularize the Kutchi Abadis in the light of a decision taken
by the chief executive in the middle of January, 2001. The
deputy commissioners are required to furnish information about
location (strategic importance or otherwise), number of
housing units, title of land and date of establishment.
According to official sources, the plan approved by the chief
executive regarding the regularization of Kutchi Abadis set up
before March 23, 1985, is likely to benefit thousands of
families living in 630 slums in the Punjab. The abadis set to
be regularized under a government plan are located on the land
owned by government departments like the Civil Aviation
Authority, Wapda, the Pakistan Railways, the Public Works
Department, the Irrigation Department, the Lahore Development
Authority, the Auqaf Department and the Evacuee Trust Property
Board.
According to the report prepared by the directorate of Kutchi
Abadis in 1986, of 630 Kutchi Abadis located throughout the
Punjab, 145 are located in Lahore alone. About 17 of these
slums including Sukh Nehr, Data Nagar, Manzoorabad, Maqbra
Morr, Shamspura, Sher Singh Road, Baja Lines, Qurban Lines,
Mian Mir Colony, Bihari Colony and Dars Baray Mian are located
on the railway land. Multan, Faisalabad, Sahiwal, Rahim Yar
Khan and Gujranwala have also their share in unplanned slums
as these urban centres have 87, 59, 57, 42 and 31 Kutchi
Abadis, respectively.
