Javed Miandad
The Ultimate Team Player
Javed Miandad

Born: 12 June 1957, Karachi

No Pakistani Cricket fan can ever forget the warm afternoon in Sharja. Cricket rivals, Pakistan and India, met once more. Pakistani batting collapsed in the early overs after chasing Indian total. Then came Miandad, slowly and gradually he settled down but there was no other batsman who would stick long enough to give hope for a victory. Fans were quite, people turned their televisions off, elders started praying and all pakistani fans were nervous around the World. The guy who put smile back on millions of Pakistani faces after his marvalous sixer on Chitan Sharma last delivery was no one, but Miandad. His repititive performance proved that Cricket is just not 'by chance', but its a game of skills, dedication, and team work.

Miandad's immense batting talent and a very sharp cricketing mind has made Javed Miandad Pakistan`s most valuable batsman. Starting with a scintillating century on debut against New Zealand at Lahore at age 19, Javed`s Test batting average never dropped below fifty throughout his 20 year career. Javed is by far Pakistan`s most experienced Test player, and most prolific run- getter - 8832 Test runs at 52.57. Apart from his formidable Test record, Javed has been Pakistan`s hero in limited overs cricket on many occasions when his ability to stand strong when the rest of the batting crumbles has snatched victory from the jaws of defeat.

Pakistan Cricket's Legend

Javed Miandad

Javed Miandad

Hailing from Karachi, Javed played his domestic cricket for Habib Bank. Javed`s non-textbook batting style, though the scourge of cricket coaches, has attracted many young players, like Basit Ali, to model themselves on. He returned from a two-year absence from international cricket to retake his place as the backbone of Pakistan`s batting in the 1996 event, and became the only player to have played in all six World Cups.

Javed Miandad was the greatest batsman to ever come from Pakistan. Without a doubt, he was the best. A true fighter, with no hang up's, and a 100% team man. Javed is the most loved cricketer of all time in Pakistan. His fan following is tremendous.

I remember the last time I saw him bat..It was at one of the league matches during the 1996 World Cup in Karachi. Pakistan were playing against England and were chasing a target of 250. Saeed Anwar had already got them of to a flier with a fluent 72, but once he was out, the crowd began to get restless. Everyone knew that with the start provided by Anwar, the target was well in reach. And we all wanted to see Javed bat, since this would be his last International match in Karachi. So the chant of 'Javed' 'Javed' broke out and it did not stop till Javed came out to bat at the fall of Ijaz Ahmed's wicket. We wanted to see Javed bat so much, that everyone actually cheered when Ijaz got out, and the true Cricketing Icon, Javed Miandad came to the crease. The atmosphere at the National Stadium that day was amazing, and the fact that many got to witness Javed Miandad bat for the last time in Karachi, almost made up for the disappointment of losing at Banglore.

Javed Miandad is a source of inspiration for many of today's cricketers. Wasim Akram was nurtured by Imran once he came into the side, but it was Javed who first spotted Akram in the nets and forced the selectors to include him in the touring party to New Zealand. Similarly, today's Pakistan Stars, such as Saeed Anwar and Basit Ali consider Miandad as their cricketing idol and have shaped their game much like Miandad. Today, Javed holds a senior position with Habib Bank and is the Coach of the Pakistan team. It's a real real blessing for Pakistan cricket, with Javed Miandad there to guide the players.
