Moin Khan

Born:23 September 1971, Rawalpindi

Pakistan's wicketkeeper captain and one of the finest batsmen in the world coming down the order in One-Day Internationals, Moin Khan has come a long way from the reticent 19-year-old who made his international debut against the West Indies, during their 1990-91 tour of Pakistan. In fact, one look at him on the field, and shy is the last word that comes to mind -- boisterous, excitable and energetic seem far more apt.

Moin Khan is a good wicket keeper and a reliable batsman lower down the order thus strengthening the batting line up of Pakistan. Unpredictablity -- in the positive sense -- is what Pakistan are all about, and Moin Khan personifies that. He may not be as good as Pakistan's former wicket-keeping aces Wasim Bari and Salim Yousuf when he is behind the wickets, but his exuberance and his utility with the bat more than make up for that. For he is dangerous; Moin is a cricketer who is almost synonymous with grit.

There have been so many occasions on which he has dug his side out of a hole with a scintillating innings, coming in at No 6 or 7. Each one of his three hundreds and 25 fifties in international cricket have come at a time Pakistan needed them desperately. As captain, he is having a great run. The Cola Cola Cup at Sharjah and the triangular series in West Indies -- also involving Zimbabwe and the hosts -- are already under his belt.

Moin has been on a roll since the 1999 World Cup, where his heroics with the bat were largely responsible for Pakistan making the final. A member of the Asia XI team during the ICC Cricket Week at Dhaka in April, he is right up there with the most volatile wicketkeeper-batsmen in the world. In fact Pakistan, without Moin egging them on from behind the stumps, could be quite different from their regular world-beating selves.
