Hajra Mansur’s beautiful doe eyed women are so characteristic of the artist that one does not even have to look for her signature. Luminous, Chughtaisque, delicate yet powerful are Hajra’s women. Chughtaiesque yet a modernity which is refreshing and unique.

The backdrop for most of her women is a dark and romantic place. They can be set against a jeweled window or a pavilion. The Bengal School of Artists influences her style. She graduated from the Government College of Arts and Crafts Lucknow.

There were many Bengali teachers on staff who seem to have influenced her work. She prefers the oriental style of painting to the occidental. The work has a strong two-dimensional quality. Using an oriental ‘wash’ method, she paints in acrylic, having several paintings in process at the same time. Her romantic, classic style harks back to the times of the Persian and Moghul Miniaturists.
