Liaquat Ali Khan
1st Prime Minister of Pakistan
(1948- 1951)

Pakistan's #1

1st Prime Minister of Pakistan Right after partition, while Quaid-e-Azam handled the post of the governor-general of the country, Liaquat Ali Khan, the then of the majority party - the Muslim League, was bestowed the honor and responsibility of being Pakistan's first Prime Minister. Both these honorable men were replaced early, as Quaid-e-Azam was to die a year after he achieved a separate homeland for the Muslim people, on 11th September, 1948 and Liaquat Ali Khan was assassinated on 16th October, 1951 while addressing a public meeting.
Liaquat Ali Khan held a very special place for the people of the newly created Pakistan. He was had lived a more comfortable and luxurious life before coming to Pakistan, coming from a Nawab family. For Pakistan and its people, he had given up all this and had undergone almost as much hardships as the next man. Pakistanis don't very easily give much respect to their premiers and bureaucrats, but because Liaquat Ali Khan went through a difficult transition while migrating, he held a special position, and still holds that position in the history of Pakistan. Another reason for this love and honor was that Liaquat Ali Khan had worked closely for twelve years with the Quaid-e-Azam.
Thereby, people felt confident that such a man would provide a better future for the new country, and put this new nation on a path of prosperity. Liaquat Ali Khan is undoubtedly the only Prime Minister who has maintained his popularity among the masses till date. Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto comes in a close second, but his popularity was short-lived and his death less mourned by the masses. To show their love for him, Liaquat Ali Khan became known to the masses as 'Quaid-e-Millat' or 'father of the nation'.
But good things hardly ever seem to last in Pakistan, for the very man that the people of Pakistan came to respect was assassinated by them only three years down the line. It seems that the main reason Prime Minister Liaquat Ali Khan was assassinated so early in the history of Pakistan, was that he must have irked his colleagues when he had not adhered to the parliamentary procedures. And at times he had taken steps and decisions without consulting his colleagues.

On his own initiative, Liaquat Ali Khan dismissed the Mamdot Ministry of Punjab on January 24, 1949. Similarly, he supported the United Nation's action in Korea in June 1950. In April 1950, Liaquat Ali Khan visited India where he concluded the Minority Pact with Jawaharlal Nehru. In March 1951, a group of Military officers tried to stage a coup d'etat against the Prime Minister, which is generally known as the 'the Rawalpindi conspiracy'. Also in 1951, Liaquat Ali Khan visited the USA and offended the USSR by turning down an invitation by Stalin, which caused many problems for the country in the future. During Liaquat Ali Khan's short term, the Objective Resolution was adopted by the Constituent Assembly, twenty month after the first session. The first Prime Minister was assassinated on October 16, 1951 while addressing a public meeting in Rawalpindi.
