After a failed crop at the BO last year and an affair that has her parents throwing a fit, it is certainly not the best of times for Aishwarya Rai. Her much-written about affair with Salman Khan has ruffled a few more feathers this time. No, not just those of her watchmen after he allegedly threatened to beat them up, but those of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh, a Hindu fundamentalist group that aims at propagating Hindutva around the world and threatens to destroy any or all western influences penetrating Hindu culture. According to a report appearing in FilmFare Online, the mouthpiece of the Sangh has allegedly carried what could be termed as a defamatory article against Khan, thereby warning Aishwarya against having an affair with him. The article allegedly lists out 'flaws' in Salman, calling him an alcoholic and listing out his criminal activities. It also alleges Salman's nexus with the underworld and his fits of fury! The article is reported to have appeared in the latest issue of the mouthpiece of the RSS, Panchjanya. It is said to warn Aishwarya of the perils of having an affair with the infamous actor and also alleges that Ash's father tried to have Salman off her back by having Shiv Sena, Bal Thackeray chief intervene, but apparently decided against it when they heard that Salman shares a great rapport with the chief's daughter-in-law, Smita Thackeray, a film producer.
In addition, the article alleges that Ash's father refused to come on record for that particular article fearing retaliation on Salman's part! Incidentally, a Mumbai tabloid had recently carried a front-page story on how Ash's family is afraid of Salman and how shocked the family is at Ash's decision to carry on with him, despite his reputation. In fact, after the incident when Salman came knocking on Ash's apartment door late in the night after beating up the watchmen, Aishwarys is reported to have issued a statement to a dot com, saying that an act of "genuine concern has been misconstrued as an act of vandalism" instead.
The article in question is being interpreted as being anti-minority and as an act of moral policing, considering Aishwarya's popularity amongst the Hindu community. But, the article also concludes by saying that Salman's Muslim antecedents have nothing to do with the particular tirade.
Last heard, Salman and family were planning a massive PR exercise for the fading star. Ash's popularity appears to be affected, and most trade watchers believe that the relationship is affecting her standing in the market. Ash has not delivered a hit in the last year, with the exception of the regional film, 'Kandukondein Kandukondein. Salman is also rumored to be dictating Ash's choice of film offers. The relationship, based on past experiences of Salman's past relationships appears to be taking its toll on the former Miss World, who is now in a quandary as to how she should deal with all the bad press she has been receiving, the FilmFare Online report said.
